Synopsis: Since 9/11 there has been a concerted effort to improve ship and port security. The US launched three important initiatives designed to tighten security while expediting legitimate trade. In addition, the International Maritime Organization has expanded SOLAS to incorporate the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) code which commits member states to enhanced security measures effective July 2004. This brief describes the programs now in effect and discusses technologies along with compliance costs affecting the international shipping community.
